Welcome to the College of Health Sciences & Allied Professions

The new College of Health Sciences and Allied Professions melds the disciplines of athletic training, communication disorders, exercise science, foodsystems management, health care management, health promotion, nursing, nutrition, physical education, recreation management, and social work. Through this unique blend of specialties, the College integrates health, wellness, and education to position Appalachian as the premier University for the outstanding academic preparation of health and allied professionals in western North Carolina.

Whitt named founding dean

October 8, 2009: Frederick K. “Fred” Whitt has been named founding dean of the new College of Health Sciences and Allied Professions at Appalachian State University. He will begin his new duties in January 2010. [ more ]

Planning Underway for New College

Planning for the new college has begun and is being undertaken by four working groups. The transition to this new college is expected to be complete by Fall 2011.

Programs

The following programs will be housed in the new college as academic departments:

  • Health, Leisure and Exercise Science
  • Healthcare Management
  • Nursing
  • Nutrition and Foodsystems Management
  • Social Work

Timeline

2008-2009

  • The Task Force finalized recommendations regarding transitioning to the new college.
  • The Search Committee began its work on identifying a founding dean.
  • The Building Planning Committee worked on identifying space issues and on plans for the proposed new facility.

2009-2010

  • The founding dean is identified, begins to assemble college-level staff, and assumes responsibility for further planning of the new college.
  • The Building Planning Committee continues its work, pending final approval of funding.

2010-2011

  • Administrative oversight for academic programs and departments is transitioned to the new college.

2015

  • The earliest date for the new facility to be ready for use, contingent upon funding.
