About
Feasibility Study
In March 2008, Dr. Harold Jones, Dean of the School of Health Professions at UA-Birmingham, visited Appalachian to review the University's current health-related resources -- departments and programs, including the Institute for Health and Human Services -- and those of the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System in order to make a recommendation on the feasibility of creating a college to house Appalachian's health-related disciplines. His conclusion: "I strongly believe that you are extremely well-positioned to move forward with the creation of a college of health sciences." In his report (PDF), Dr. Jones made several recommendations about how to proceed, one of which was to start immediately by naming a committee with representation from the disciplines willing to become part of the new college.
BOT and BOG Approvals
In September 2008, the Board of Trustees (BOT) of Appalachian recommended the establishment of a new college to house the health-related programs at Appalachian. In October 2008, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors (BOG) acted on the Trustees' recommendation and approved the new college.
Planning Phase Workgroups
Planning for the new college has begun and is being undertaken by four working groups:
- The Coordinating Committee, chaired by Chancellor Ken Peacock, is working on collaborating with the local healthcare provider, the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System.
- The Health College Task Force, chaired by Dr. Holly Hirst, submitted recommendations related to the name, mission, and administrative structure for the College in May 2009. The recommendations are currently being considered by the Provost.
- The Dean's Search Committee, chaired by Dr. Susan Roggenkamp, is working to identify a founding dean. The advertisement has been published and can be found on Appalachian's Human Resource Services website.
- The Building Planning Committee, chaired by Mr. Art Rex, is examining the space needs for the college, and will plan the proposed new facility when planning funding becomes available.
